For more than 77 years, one thing has stayed true at Richard’s School of Dance in Oshkosh, Wisconsin: dance isn’t just something you learn, it’s something you grow into.

Founded in 1949 by Richard Verhoeven, the studio began with just a handful of students and a big belief that “the well-trained students of today are the stars of tomorrow.” Today, that belief is still alive and moving through generations of dancers, families, and teachers who have made Richard’s feel like home.
A Legacy Built on Passion (and People)
Richard Verhoeven, known by many as “Mr. Tap”, was more than a founder. He was a performer, teacher, and mentor who trained under some of the greatest dancers of his time and even performed during World War II for U.S. troops. His love for dance didn’t just build a studio, it built a legacy that continues to inspire today.
That legacy was carried forward by his daughter, Patricia Verhoeven-Provost, who expanded the studio’s programs and helped shape it into a modern, thriving dance space.
Now, under the leadership of owner and Artistic Director Tricia Bayer, that same foundation continues, blending tradition with new opportunities for today’s dancers. Tricia herself grew up in the studio, starting as a young dancer at age 3 and eventually stepping into leadership, keeping the heart of Richard’s alive while helping it evolve.
A Place Where Everyone Belongs
One of the things that makes Richard’s stand out? Dance is truly for everyone.
From toddlers taking their first creative steps to adults rediscovering movement, the studio offers classes for all ages and experience levels. Programs include:
Tap, Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop
Modern, Contemporary, and Lyrical
Irish Dance and Aerial Arts
Adaptive Dance programs for individuals with special needs
Dance fitness classes and even homeschool programs
For younger dancers, classes focus on creativity and exploration, helping kids understand movement before focusing on technique. As they grow, students build skills, confidence, and their own unique style.
More Than Dance, It’s a Community
Ask any family at Richard’s, and you’ll hear the same thing: it feels like family.
Students don’t just learn choreography, they build friendships, support each other, and grow together. Parents connect. Siblings follow in each other’s footsteps.
There’s also a strong focus on giving back. From community performances to outreach programs and adaptive dance classes, Richard’s uses movement as a way to connect and uplift others, on and off the stage.
