Spring arrives with unmistakable beauty in Columbus, Wisconsin – a season when the town quite literally blossoms into color – a perfect getaway for families.

Spring is a season when the town fully lives up to its nickname, “Redbud City.”

As winter fades, Eastern redbud trees burst into bloom, filling neighborhoods and streets with soft pink-purple flowers that signal spring has truly arrived. This beloved display is celebrated each year with Redbud Day, a community tradition held in early May that honors the trees and the season itself.

These blooms aren’t just a pretty backdrop; they’re part of what makes Columbus feel welcoming, vibrant, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Exploring Columbus, Wisconsin

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

As the redbuds come alive, so does the rest of the city. Warmer days invite families outdoors to stroll downtown, enjoy the fresh air, and slow down after a long winter indoors. Spring in Columbus has a relaxed, easy rhythm — perfect for wandering without a strict agenda and letting the season lead the way.

Historic Downtown Columbus is a well-preserved 19th-century commercial district centered around Dickason Boulevard and James Street. As redbuds bloom nearby, downtown offers a walkable mix of history, architecture, and small-town charm. Many of the cream brick buildings date back to the 1850s.

Downtown landmarks tell the story of Columbus’s past while adding character to a modern-day visit. The area’s timeless look has even caught Hollywood’s eye, serving as a filming location for the 2009 movie Public Enemies. Today, this district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with nearby historic residential neighborhoods.

CRAWFISH RIVER

The Crawfish River adds to the charm, offering peaceful views as riverbanks begin to green up. Whether you’re walking nearby paths, snapping photos of the blooming trees, or simply pausing to take it all in, the river helps anchor Columbus as a place where nature and community intersect.
