The Power of a Helping Hand

By Alicia Gehrig, Community Outreach Coordinator, Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services, Inc.

Every single person walks around with different life experiences.

These experiences shape them into who they are and the decisions that they make each day. Many times, when people are struggling, they do so in silence. You may not be aware of the struggles that someone is facing. Instead of judging that person because you don’t understand what they are going through, it’s important to show empathy and kindness to ALL people. When you know someone who is hurting or sad, it’s important to offer a helping hand to show you care.

There are many different ways that you can show empathy for someone including:

  • Listen
  • Withhold judgement
  • Give a compliment
  • Try to put yourself in their shoes
  • Be patient & kind
  • Share
  • Offer help
  • Offer physical connection (Like a hug)

Being able to practice empathy is one of the most important life skills you can learn.

Empathy can help you, and others, feel fulfilled and supported in your day to day life. Sometimes all you need to do is offer a listening ear and a helping hand to those who are hurting. You never know who needs it most so remember to always be kind and lead with empathy.
