Gestation
A female dog carries her puppies approximately 60 days before they are born.
Puppies are born blind
As adults, they will see color but not as vividly as humans can. They also have three eyelids; the third is a membrane for extra protection.
Puppies are born deaf.
As adults, they will hear four to ten times more accurate than a human’s ability to hear. They also have roughly twice as many ear muscles as humans, which helps them to move their ears to tune in on sounds.
Puppies cannot smell when they are born
As adults, their sense of smell is estimated to be one thousand to one million times stronger than a human.
Puppies are born without teeth
As an adult, they will likely have 42 teeth.
