Groundhog Day

February 2, 2022

Fun Facts!

Groundhog Day is Held Annually on February 2

The most famous Groundhog Day Celebration is in Punxsutawney, PA where the Groundhog’s name is Punxsutawney Phil.

The Legend:

If the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

If the groundhog does not see its shadow, spring will be here soon.

The Groundhog is a large rodent, also known as the Woodchuck.

Say this three times fast: “How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?”

Groundhogs are one of the few animals that truly hibernate.

While hibernating the groundhog body temperature drops from over 90 degrees to the low 40s. Their heartbeat slows from over 90 beats per minute to about 4 beats per minute.

Groundhogs are a member of the squirrel family.

They weigh about 13 pounds and their tail can grow from 7 to almost 10 inches long.

Groundhogs whistle when they are afraid or alarmed.

Groundhogs can swim and/or climb trees if necessary
