Spring Pet Maintenance Series Part 2

Leash, Collar & Identification Tag

Sometimes, it is easy to overlook the obvious. Our beloved pet’s leash, collar and identification are the lifeline that connects our pets to us. It is important to regularly inspect these items for accuracy, size, weight and wear.

Identification

Often, owners will experience a change in telephone number or address but forget to change this information on their pet’s identification tag. Spring is a good time to annually double check your pet’s identification. Check legibility and accuracy of information to be sure if your pet is lost that he has your current contact information on him.

Gear

As puppies grow, as seasons/coats change, and as dogs age, their size will change. A collar that fit in December, may be too loose in June. A collar that is too loose will easily slide off. A collar that is too tight will cause discomfort, as well as, possible skin irritation, matting and even breathing and choking problems. A collar that is worn can break off leaving your pet unattended without identification.

A leash that is improperly fit in weight and length will cause challenges and potential danger while walking your dog. A leash that has been chewed on, has wear from rubbing or any other signs of damage should be immediately thrown out and replaced.

There are many types, styles and options available, based on the needs of your pet. Your local pet shop is an excellent resource to offer you personal assistance with assessing your pet’s gear, as well as properly fitting your pet in the gear best suited for her. Always be sure to choose a pet shop that will allow you to bring your pet with you. The pet shop should have staff that are knowledgeable about their products as well as a strong interest in serving your pet’s needs. Our hot spot pet shops (found on page 35 of the May 2018 issue of TGVG) are an excellent choice!
