4th of July Pet Safety Tips

4th of july pet safety

Here are some helpful tips from The Greater Valley Guide on keeping your pets safe this 4th of July holiday!

#1: Leave Your Pet at Home

The safest place for your pet on the 4th of July is at home in a safe, secure location. A crate or small area located somewhere away from doors and windows is ideal. Although we may enjoy the bright lights and loud booms, they can be extremely stressful for our pets. A dark, secure, quiet location will allow our pets to feel safe and comfortable. If your pet suffers from anxiety, soft music or an anxiety vest may be helpful.

Never leave your pet alone in a car – even to remove them from crowds or fireworks. Your vehicle can reach dangerous temperatures very quickly. Leaving your pet alone in a car puts them at risk of serious illness and even death. “Cracking the windows” is not sufficient to protect your pet from a deadly situation. “It will be just a few minutes” is never a safe reason to leave your pet alone in a car.

#2: Double Check Your Pet’s Identification

Make sure your pet has an identification tag with accurate and current information about how your pet may be returned to you if she is lost.

#3: Take a Current Photo

Snap a few photos of your pet from the front and sides. In the event that your pet becomes separated from you, you will be able to quickly get the photos out while you search.

#4: No Glow Sticks or Jewelry

Avoid the temptation to add a pretty glow necklace or glasses on your pet. While it may seem like fun, your pet may not enjoy the experience. Additionally, the chemical that makes these items glow can cause illness to your pet if he chews on it. If he swallows any portion of these items it can cause an internal blockage.

#5: Consider Boarding Your Pet

If you will be travelling or celebrating away from home, consider boarding your pet for the 4th of July Holiday.

#6: Never light fireworks or sparklers near your pet

Your pet can be injured with burns to her nose, paws, and fur/body. Loud noises can startle your pet and can even cause injury to her ears.

#7: Post Celebration Clean Up

Thoroughly check your yard for debris in the morning light – before allowing your pet outdoors.

We wish you and your pet a safe and healthy 4th of July!
